Gladys Mitchell

Pseudonyms: Stephen Hockaby and Malcom Torrie
 

Gladys Maude Winifred Mitchell was born in Cowley, Oxfordshire. After primary school and the First World War she studied at Goldsmith's College at the University of London. In 1921 she became a teacher of English and history. It was whilst teaching that, at the age of 28, she began her long and successful literary career. She had written several novels but these didn't find a publisher, so she changed to crime fiction. She wrote over sixty novels featuring 'Beatrice Bradley', consultant psychologist to the Home Office. She also wrote under the pseudonyms 'Stephen Hockaby', and 'Malcolm Torrie'.
