1. 'Stanley Hastings', a private eye in New York City.
2. 'Puzzle Lady', miss Cora Felton, an eccentric old lady with a puzzle column.
3. 'Steve Winslow', an actor-turned-lawyer (under the pseudonym 'J.P. Hailey').
