Michael Andrew Cox was born in Northamptonshire. He was an author, musician and editor. In the 1970s he released record albums for EMI under the pseudonyms 'Matthew Ellis' and 'Obie Clayton'. In 1989, he joined Oxford University Press where he became senior commissioning editor.
