Frances Gertrude Cowen was born in Oxford. She was educated at Ursuline Convent, Oxford and Milham Ford School, Oxford. From 1938 to 1939, she worked for Blackwell Publishers. From 1940 to 1944, she was a member of the Air Raid Precautions staff in Dartmouth. She also wrote children's and history books and used the pseudonym 'Eleanor Hyde'. |
