Clive Eric Cussler was born in Aurora, Illinois and grew up in Alhambra, California. He
was educated at Passadena City College for two years until dropping
out to enlist in the US Air Force during the Korean War. During the
1960Žs Cussler worked in advertising, first as a copywriter and later
as a creative director of the DŽArcy advertising agency in Los
Angeles. In 1978, he founded the National Underwater and Marine
Agency (NUMA), a non-profit foundation to locate, identify, and
preserve shipwrecks of historical significance. In addition to his
passion for adventure, Cussler is an avid automobile collector. He
and his wife divide their time between their Colorado home, and their
winter home in Paradise Valley, Arizona. They have three children. He is
