Jon Cleary
1917-2010
 

Jon Stephen Cleary was born in Sydney, Australia. He was educated at the Marist Brothers school in Randwick, New South Wales. At the age of fourteen, he left school and spent eight years out of work or doing odd jobs. In 1940, he joined the Australian Army and served in the Middle East and New Guinea. During this time he started to write seriously. After the war, he worked in London and New York as a journalist. Many of his books were made into films. He is the creator of 'Scobie Malone', an inspector in Sydney.
