Pseudonym of Thomas Willes Chitty. He was born in Felixstowe, Suffolk. He was educated at Winchester College and University College, Oxford. He served in the Royal Navy and worked briefly for the Inland Revenue and then for the Shell Petroleum Company before becoming a full-time writer.
