Edith Pargeter
1913-1995
Pseudonyms: Jolyon Carr, Ellis Peters and John Redfern
 

Edith Mary Pargeter was born in Horsehay, Shropshire. After school she was employed as a chemist's assistant. At the outbreak of the war she enlisted with the WRNS. Her first novel was an historical one. When her following novels proved to be unsuccessful, she turned to crime fiction. She is the creator of:
1. 'Brother Cadfael', a monk and amateur detective in Shrewsbury in 12th century England (under the pseudonym 'Ellis Peters').
2. 'George Felse', a Detective Chief Inspector (under the pseudonym 'Ellis Peters', except the first book).
