Ernest Marsh Poate was born in Yokohama, Japan to American parents. He was an author, attorney and physician. He died in Southern Pines, North Carolina. He also wrote numerous short stories. He is the creator of:
1. 'Dr. Kirke Montgomery', a country doctor and amateur sleuth in New England (under the pseudonym 'Arthur Mallory').
2. 'Thaddeus Bentiron', a Freudian psychologist in New York City.
