Ladbroke Lionel Day Black was born in Burley-in-Wharfedale, Yorkshire. He was educated in Ireland and at Cambridge. He was a journalist and author. He is the creator of 'Havlock Preed', a solicitor. He also wrote several novels featuring 'Sexton Blake', a detective modelled on Sherlock Holmes (under his own name and under the pseudonym 'Paul Urquhart').
