Penelope Fitzgerald was born in Lincoln. She was educated at Wycombe Abbey and Somerville College, Oxford University. She also wrote literary novels, historical novels, and biographies. In 1999, she was awarded the Golden PEN Award by English PEN for a lifetime's distinguished service to literature.
