Ralph Selwood Kendall was born in Birmingham. He was educated at Solihull School in Warwickshire. He served in the Army in South Africa during the Boer War. In 1902, he settled in Canada where he joined the Royal North-West Mounted Police. In 1909, he married Kate McEachran. In 1924, he retired from police work.
