Martin Waddell was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland. He currently lives in Newcastle, County Down, Northern Ireland. He primarily writes children's books under his own name and under the pseudonym 'Catherine Sefton'. He is the creator of 'Gerald Otley', a conman. The first book was made into a film starring Tom Courtenay and Romy Schneider.
