Clarence Hugh Holman was born in Cross Anchor, South Carolina. He was an author, literary scholar, academic administrator, and Professor of English at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. He is the creator of 'Sheriff Macready', the sheriff of fictional Hart County, South Carolina.
