William Murdoch Duncan was born in Glasgow and educated at the University of Glasgow. He also wrote under the pseudonyms 'John Cassells', 'John Dallas', 'Neill Graham', 'Martin Locke', 'Peter Malloch', 'Lovat Marshall' and 'Lee Spencer'. He is the creator of:
1. 'The Dreamer' (Donald Reamer), a Detective Superintendent.
2. 'Superintendent Flagg' (all titles, except one, were written under the pseudonym 'John Cassells').
3. 'Laurie Hume', an Inspector.
4. 'Superintendent Leslie'.
5. 'Superintendent MacNeill'.
6. 'The Picaroon' (Ludovic Saxon), a swashbuckling buccaneer of crime (under the pseudonym 'John Cassells').
7. 'Mr. Sandyman', a private detective (under the pseudonym 'Neill Graham').
