Richard La Plante was born in Ardmore, Pennsylvania. He has a degree in clinical psychology. He is also a musician and an actor. He was married to crime writer Lynda La Plante from 1978 till 1996. He is the creator of 'Bill Fogarty and Josef Tanaka', a police detective and a forensic pathologist in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
