Gerald Jay Goldberg was born in the Bronx, New York. He was an author, critic, and professor emeritus at the University of California, Los Angeles, where he taught English and American Literature and Creative Writing. He is the creator of 'Paul Mazarelle', a police inspector in Paris, France (under the pseudonym 'Gerald Jay').
