Philip Hook read History of Art at Cambridge University. In 1973, he joined Christie’s where he headed the 19th Century Paintings Department from 1980 to 1987. Since 1994, he is the senior director of Sotheby's Impressionist and Modern Art departments and has appeared regularly as pictures expert on the BBC programme Antiques Roadshow.
