John Victor Turner was born in Manchester. He was an author, Fleet Street journalist, and crime reporter. He is the creator of:
1. 'Ebenezer Buckle', a reverend and amateur sleuth (under the pseudonym 'Nicholas Brady').
2. 'Mick Cardby', a private detective (under the pseudonym 'David Hume').
3. 'Tony Carter', a crime reporter (under the pseudonym 'David Hume').
4. 'Amos Petrie', a solicitor and amateur sleuth.
