William Lee "Bill" Shoemaker was born in Fabens, Texas. He was an author and professional jockey. He raced professionally from 1949 until 1990. After his retirement, he trained horses. He is the creator of 'Coley Killebrew', a former jockey and restaurant owner in California. The books were ghostwritten by Dick Lochte.
