Donald Eugene Pendleton was born in Little Rock,
Arkansas. In the Second World War he served in the US Navy as a
Radioman. After his naval service, he became a telegrapher for the
Southern Pacific Railroad. In 1957, he left the railroad and became
an air traffic control specialist till 1961. He then turned toward
aerospace engineering. In 1967, Pendleton became a full-time writer.
